Accommodations are changes to how your child learns, not what they learn. Unlike modifications that alter the curriculum, accommodations remove barriers so your child can access the same content as their peers. Under IDEA and Section 504, schools are legally required to provide agreed-upon accommodations.

When bringing accommodations to an IEP meeting, be specific about what you're requesting and why. Use data — for example, "My child's test scores are 30% higher when given extended time." Refer to the legal basis for each accommodation (IDEA or Section 504) and ask that all agreed accommodations are written directly into the IEP document. If a school pushes back, ask them to provide their refusal in writing through Prior Written Notice.
